Civic & State Square
Every great city has a lively central heart.
The Civic and State Square Masterplan is an important part of the Darwin City Deal.
The precinct is transforming the heart of the city centre into a community and event space that links the Waterfront with the city centre. It will become a tropical, green, cool and shaded oasis within the city - a spacious place for events, festivals, gatherings and displays.
The new State Square Underground Car park has replaced heat-generating car parks and made way for stunning new landscaping. The demolition of the Chan Building is complete and works are underway to transform the site into a grassed area.
Apart from creating tropical green and landscaped parkland, this work has relocated 300 heat-generating car spaces to the new multi-level carpark.
The heart of the Masterplan will see a new art gallery built, providing a space for the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) to showcase the Northern Territory’s extensive art collection within the city centre.
